Stressing perfection: a deathbox
Do you dare (to make mistakes)? I find it not easy. Do we give ourselves space for it? I often ask myself, am I on the right track? Like I’m being micromanaged by my own self criticism. I also experienced once being directed by a micro-manager at work. One who closely watches your every move. It gave me the heebie-jeebies. Being critically micro-managed by yourself of someone else is a source of choice paralysis for me.
Without the space to make mistakes, there is no room for growth.
We can learn a lot from kids. They fall and are not ashamed, but get right back up. Get up to try again. It’s an important part of a learning process. Another example is building muscle. Muscle tissue is gained through micro tears in the muscle during heavy workout. The recovery process results in added muscle mass. Decrease and increase. Downwards and upwards. Falling and getting back up. It’s a process for growth.
That is why if we want to see growth in each other, we need a culture where there we give each other space to make mistakes and don’t judge each other for it. Making mistakes? Let’s call it ‘to tumble’.
I often tumble, I often fall.
But personally I hope to be able to say with greater ease:
To tumble, I love to do!
Because without ever losing my balance,
I am not able to move forward
out of fear mentality and
into faith mentality
